CE Courses: What, When, and Where?

One of the most common questions I’m asked is, "What CE course do you recommend?"

Unfortunately, this question doesn’t have a simple answer. The best course for you depends on your current stage in CE training, your experience, and your comfort level with various procedures. Do you feel confident with your treatment planning, diagnosis, and occlusion philosophy? These foundational elements are critical to advancing your skills.

I often see young clinicians fresh out of school prioritizing CE courses on high-dollar procedures. While these courses may seem appealing, the reality is that achieving predictable results requires a solid understanding of diagnosis and treatment planning. Speaking from my own experience, dental school prepared me to treat disease—to address cavities, perform crowns, and complete root canals. However, it didn’t prepare me to recognize when an otherwise healthy-looking mouth was breaking down or how certain dental interventions could inadvertently harm a patient.

This underscores the importance of prioritizing foundational CE courses in treatment planning and diagnosis. My journey began at the Pankey Institute and later transitioned to the Kois Center, where I adopted the philosophy I now use in my everyday practice. These programs are long and can be expensive, but they are among the most valuable investments you can make in your career. They provide the essential knowledge to build a strong foundation.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can focus on clinical implementation of various restorative procedures. For this stage, I recommend a combination of in-person, hands-on training and repetitive online learning. This approach will help solidify concepts so they become second nature.

As the new year begins, many of us set professional and personal goals. When planning your academic goals, strive for balance across all the elements you need for growth. Consider:
  • In-Person Meetings: Which meetings will best support your learning and professional community?

  • Community Building: Does the course foster connections and enhance your spirit?

  • Online Support: Do you have access to regular online learning to reinforce your skills?

Take the time to map out your CE plan and find accountability partners to support your journey. Learning together makes the process more rewarding and increases your chances of success.

With careful planning, you can ensure your CE efforts are effective, enjoyable, and transformative for your career.

Whether you're exploring online learning or seeking fresh insights into treatment approaches, this is a space to grow and learn together.
